Cotton Valley Rail-Trail

 

Field trips can be a great way to learn about many things.  We took a field trip to Cotton Valley Rail-Trail to do more bird watching for our nature study about birds.  Before heading out on this beautiful day we decided to take a picnic.  We rode this trail once before on Mother's Day and noticed a great spot for a picnic.

To prepare I made some bread to make our chicken sandwiches from my previous roasted chicken. I really love my breadmaker!

I made myself some chicken salad from that yummy chicken.

Adrian is preparing some carrots and celery to go with our homemade ranch dressing dip.  You can see the chicken in the corner.  I found a great recipe for roasting a chicken in a cast iron skillet. Probably the best tasting chicken I have made. 





I made a list of what all we needed to bring: Picnic supper, bird book, bird scavenger sheet, pencils, light jackets.

Adrian's list: Fishing pole, grub worms, crickets, and tackle box. Yep, that was all he cared about...trying to snag a fish!

This trail was a railroad and when you follow the trail it goes by lakes, near family backyards, through woods, through the town of Wolfeboro, near Lake Winnipesaukee and much more that we haven't found.



 This is the old Wolfeboro train station although the spelling must of changed because we noticed it is spelled "Wolfeborough" on the station. This is also the parking area to unload bikes to begin the trail.

Enjoying our picnic at Lake Wentworth where there is a public beach area and picnic tables.  Water is still too cold for swimming but still very beautiful!

Picture of the moon and we spotted a tree swallow but it is hard to find in the pics. We also spotted pigeons, gulls, sparrows, red tipped black birds and chickadees.

This was at the very end of our day and Adrian got to do some fishing.  He didn't catch anything but he thinks he got a few nibbles.
